Get to know Propeller’s world-class team in our new, ongoing employee spotlight series. Today, we talk to Justin Greenwalt, who serves as an enterprise account executive on the sales team. He’s based out of our Denver, Colorado, office.
What do you do at Propeller?
I bring on new customers. My territory covers the western half of North America and a little bit of Europe.
I help earthwork, heavy civil, mining, aggregates, and waste management companies better manage their projects and their sites using the Propeller Platform and AeroPoints. Specifically, during the earthwork phase for civil construction, and through the lifetime of the site for mines, quarries, and landfills.
What’s your career background?
Primarily sales. I was an engineer in college—industrial engineering—then my first job was managing a cluster of hotels for Marriott after college. I started selling advertising shortly thereafter, then transitioned into software sales about eight years ago.
Since then, I’ve been primarily selling operational software within specific verticals for most of my professional life.
Before working at Propeller, what’s the strangest or most interesting job you’ve held?
Two things. I had an internship where I got to do sales in a manufacturing capacity. Every day was like an episode of How It’s Made. I got to see where they made Oreo cookies, the bags for McDonald’s, and those huge fans for Big Ass Fans.
Aside from that, my first summer out of college I was a valet/bellman for a hotel in downtown Indianapolis. That was one of the most enlightening jobs—there was never a dull moment.
Where are you from?
Indianapolis, Indiana.
What’s your favorite Propeller memory?
The whole trip to Thailand was awesome, but my favorite part was the actual process of getting there.
Long-distance air travel with all of your coworkers is hysterical experience. The marathon of getting to Southeast Asia was a good bonding moment for the Denver squad. I remember sprinting through SFO to catch our leg to Tokyo.
We made it, and Mike, Richard, and I shared a few beers over the Pacific. Then after our flight to Bangkok, we drove through the city and south to our final destination of Sam Roi Yot. All of it was something like 23 hours in transit with my coworkers. Outrageous.
If you could be any piece of worksite equipment, what would you be and why?
A part of me has always been into drawing, so something like a fine grader is appealing. They’re the last thing on a site—like the final strokes of a paintbrush before the thing is ready to go, before they start putting pavement down. It’s super-fine work and it’d be really satisfying to get that perfect, smooth trench or roadway ready.
If you could attend any professional sports game, what would it be and why?
The Masters Tournament. I really like golf, and this tournament is a huge tradition that’s been going on for a really long time. It’d be fun to go with my old man.
Do you have an office nickname? What is it?
There’s a couple. Juzzy. J-Greez. Griswold. All of which I’ve been called before. In middle school, my physics teacher started calling me “Griswold,” and it stuck until high school. There it transitioned into J-Greezy, as rapper names became more prevalent. When I told my Aussie coworkers about it, they said, “No, no, no, your name should be Juzzy.” Adding Zs into things is a big Australian thing.
If you could do any job at Propeller or on a worksite for just one day, which would you choose?
I’d want to be on a mine and drive one of those enormous Caterpillar 797 haul trucks. I’ve seen a handful since I’ve been with Propeller. It looks like you’re driving an elephant up a mountain. They’re shockingly big.
Any fun facts or talents to share?
I was the 1997 and ‘98 Indiana State Amateur Putt-Putt Champion. I went out on top. My dad liked to play in putt-putt tournaments, so I grew up sitting on the sidelines or playing. I was like ten or eleven and I was playing against adults and winning. It was great.
