DirtMate RTK is a subscription upgrade to DirtMate hardware that delivers centimeter-level GPS positioning for grade checking, point capture, stakeout, and live in-cab cut/fill display, using a base-and-rover correction setup or an existing NTRIP network. It closes the gap between weekly drone surveys and daily field decisions, letting foremen and operators verify grade independently without mobilizing a survey crew. Validated to within 2/100ths of a foot against a Trimble rover on an active civil site, it’s built for field supervision tasks between survey milestones, not as a replacement for licensed survey work.

Centimeter-level positioning for grade checks, point capture, stakeout, and in-cab guidance: Without waiting on a survey crew.

Your survey crew can’t be everywhere at once. When the drone flies weekly and the survey team can only reach a site every few days, there’s a window where grade checks, stakeout, and positioning questions fall into a gap that costs real time and money.

DirtMate RTK is built for that gap.

    What RTK actually means

RTK stands for real-time kinematic: a GPS positioning method that uses a correction stream from a base station to deliver centimeter-level accuracy in real time.

Standard GPS is accurate to a few meters at best. RTK corrections tighten that down to two to three centimeters. That’s the kind of accuracy that matters when you’re checking whether a pad is at the right grade, whether a pipe was installed at the right depth, or whether a berm is where the design says it should be.

What DirtMate RTK gives your team

DirtMate RTK is a subscription upgrade that unlocks centimeter-level RTK positioning on existing DirtMate hardware. Four core workflows come with it.

    Grade checking
Compare the current surface against your design right on site. Foremen answer their own questions without a survey call-out.
    Point capture
Log precise coordinates for any position on site. Syncs automatically into Propeller alongside your drone data.
    Stakeout
Navigate to any point in your design file on the ground. Mark it, verify it, move on.
    In-cab operator view
Live cut/fill display in the cab. Operators check grade without stopping the machine or waiting for a foreman.

How corrections work: base and rover, simply explained

DirtMate RTK uses a base-and-rover setup to deliver its accuracy. Here’s what that means in plain English.

    The base station
Sits at a fixed, known position on or near the site. Broadcasts correction signals that eliminate the atmospheric and satellite drift that makes standard GPS unreliable. One DirtMate can fill this role.
    RTK
    corrections
    →
    The rover
The mobile unit on the ground or in the cab. Receives the correction signal and combines it with its own GPS to deliver centimeter-level positioning in real time.

You can also connect DirtMate to an existing correction network (like a NTRIP service or regional CORS reference station) if your region already has one set up. Either approach works. You don’t need to replace your existing correction source.

    What DirtMate RTK is not

Being honest about the boundaries helps you set the right expectations on site and with the survey crew.

A field supervision tool, not licensed survey equipment
DirtMate RTK is built for grade checking, self-serve positioning, and in-cab guidance. Legally mandated survey work, boundary surveys, and cadastral stakeout still belong to your survey crew.
Purpose-built for field positioning, not full survey field control
Traditional survey rovers include the complete toolkit for control surveys, complex alignments, and boundary work requiring a qualified surveyor. DirtMate RTK handles point capture and basic stakeout inside Propeller, designed for the field supervision tasks between survey milestones.
A complement to PPK drone surveying, not a replacement
DirtMate RTK uses real-time RTK corrections for live positioning. Propeller’s PPK drone survey workflow uses DirtMate base data for post-processing corrections. The two are complementary, not interchangeable.

    What accuracy actually looks like

Two real-world validations worth knowing before you evaluate.

Prince Construction — Civil contractor, Florida
    2/100ths ft
Validated against a Trimble rover on an active civil site. Survey crew confirmed it would save hours of inter-site travel for grade checking alone.
Huwa Enterprises — Kasen Huwa, Director of Analytics
    2–3 dozers
Saved per job site by putting cut/fill data in the cab. Replacing $20k Topcon and Leica heads regularly damaged in the field.

For earthwork grade checking, those tolerances are well inside what the work requires.

What it looks like day to day

    For the foreman
Walk to a section close to final grade, pull up Propeller on the phone, and get an immediate read on where they are relative to design. Answer the question and move on.
    For the operator
The in-cab view shows a live cut/fill display against the design surface. Grade lines are visible. The machine keeps moving.
    For the project manager
Captured points sync automatically into Propeller and appear alongside drone survey data on the same map. Everything in one place, automatically.

    Common questions

Does it replace our existing NTRIP or CORS network?

No. DirtMate RTK connects to your existing NTRIP or CORS network if you have one. You can also use one DirtMate as a base station to provide corrections to others on site, useful for sites without network coverage.

Can operators use it, or just surveyors and foremen?

All three. The in-cab view is designed specifically for operators. Grade check and point capture workflows are built for foremen and site supervisors. None of these require a surveyor’s competency to operate safely.

What happens if signal drops on a deep cut?

DirtMate logs locally and reconciles when the connection returns, so data isn’t lost. For sites with chronic dead zones, one DirtMate can act as a local base to extend coverage where NTRIP can’t reach.

Does it work alongside our Trimble rovers?

Yes. DirtMate RTK and traditional survey rovers are complementary. The rover stays on boundary surveys, control work, and complex alignment stakeout. DirtMate RTK handles the self-serve grade checks and field positioning your survey crew would otherwise have to mobilize for.

Is it a good fit if we’re new to DirtMate?

Yes. DirtMate RTK is available both as an upgrade to existing DirtMate customers and as part of a combined package for teams new to DirtMate. The combined platform gives you machine tracking, telematics, and RTK grade checking in one subscription.

    Getting started

Every inter-site trip your survey crew doesn’t have to make, every grade call a foreman can answer in the field without a callback, every day the machine keeps moving: that’s what DirtMate RTK is built for. For technical setup detail, the Propeller help center covers correction source configuration, base station setup, and first-use validation.
